Description:
Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF), a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and empowering public-interest journalism, is seeking an HR/Finance Analyst to support both finance and human resources functions. Reporting to the Chief Development & Operations Officer, this role involves compliance tracking, financial recordkeeping and reporting, recruitment support, and other HR projects as needed. This position is ideal for candidates who enjoy building systems, streamlining processes, and contributing to a mission-driven organization.

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Operations:

  • Act as the main liaison with the external accounting firm and coordinate deliverables
  • Manage accounts payable and receivable, ensuring accurate coding, timely approvals, and deposits
  • Reconcile company credit card transactions monthly and staff reimbursements weekly
  • Prepare spending reports, budget-to-actual analyses, and trend reports for leadership and budget owners
  • Support annual audits, tax return preparation, and budgeting processes with financial data and documentation
  • Coordinate quarterly Finance Subcommittee meetings and annual audit reviews with the board
  • Implement financial compliance updates and process improvements, including staff training and automation opportunities
  • Track grant income and expenses, and prepare funder report documentation
  • Maintain accurate records in accounting systems, ensuring timely data entry
  • Review vendor contracts for alignment with budget parameters

Human Resources:

  • Support recruitment by maintaining applicant tracking, posting jobs, screening resumes, and coordinating interviews
  • Manage onboarding for new staff and contractors, including equipment procurement, training scheduling, and I-9 verifications
  • Coordinate the annual performance review process, reminders, and salary updates
  • Draft independent contractor agreements within budgetary guidelines
  • Maintain organizational infrastructure including PTO approvals, state tax notices, employee handbook updates, and holiday calendar management
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Development & Operations Officer

Required Qualifications:

  • Passion for press freedom and the First Amendment
  • 2–4+ years of experience in finance, accounting, or HR, with budgeting and financial reporting expertise
  • Familiarity with GAAP and nonprofit accounting, including grants management
  • Proficiency in Excel or Google Sheets with strong attention to detail
  • Experience with accounting systems such as Justworks, Bill.com, or Sage Intacct
  • Ability to handle confidential information with professionalism and integrity
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and diplomatic skills to liaise effectively with colleagues
