Crawford & Company is seeking a Disability Benefit Specialist to join their dynamic team in Fort Lauderdale, FL. This role is key in managing and evaluating short-term and long-term disability claims by ensuring accurate eligibility determination and providing clear and effective communication to all stakeholders. Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage a designated caseload of both Short-Term Disability (STD) and Long-Term Disability (LTD) claims.
  • Communicate directly with claimants, employers, and medical providers to collect and verify all necessary information for claims processing.
  • Apply contractual provisions, case management practices, and standard procedures to determine benefit eligibility accurately.
  • Provide top-tier customer service by issuing benefit determinations within specified timelines and responding promptly to inquiries.
  • Independently handle claims, incorporating clinical advice as needed for more complex cases.
  • Verify continuing disability status and collaborate with medical professionals, vocational rehab experts, and nurses to explore return-to-work options.
  • Utilize disability claim systems to manage workflows and authorize payments while meeting quality and efficiency standards.
  • Ensure smooth and timely transitions from STD to LTD for qualifying claimants.
  • Prepare reports and analyze claims activities for internal stakeholders and clients.
  • Understand and follow specialized client protocols and performance standards.
  • Support and mentor team members including trainees and processors as required.
  • Collaborate effectively in a team setting and perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience is essential.
  • At least 2 years of experience in managing STD/LTD disability claims.
  • Prior exposure to Third-Party Administration (TPA) or self-administration services is desirable.
  • Familiarity with FMLA or state-specific leave claims is a plus.
  • Strong aptitude for understanding medical terminology and disability regulations.
  • Proven ability to work independently while utilizing various technical resources.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and web-based platforms.
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills.
  • Solid knowledge of ERISA regulations, offsets, deductions, and Social Security processes.
  • Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and analytical skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for working with both external partners and internal teams.
