BNSF Railway – Sr/Staff Data Engineer (Remote – US)

BNSF Railway, one of the largest freight railroads in the United States, is seeking a Sr/Staff Data Engineer to join our technology division, bnsf | tech. This full-time remote position allows employees to work from anywhere within the contiguous 48 states, with occasional travel (up to 20%) to corporate headquarters in Fort Worth, TX.

As a member of our team, you will help transform freight rail operations by developing advanced data solutions that enable real-time insights, optimize business processes, and support critical operations across North America.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement efficient data streaming solutions for real-time processing.
  • Build and maintain robust data pipelines for both batch and real-time ETL processes.
  • Develop and manage large-scale data warehouses to support business intelligence and analytics needs.
  • Create certified datasets by integrating diverse data sources to ensure accuracy and reliability.
  • Collaborate with data scientists, analysts, and other stakeholders to deliver effective data solutions.
  • Monitor and optimize data workflows, troubleshoot issues, and ensure scalable, high-performance data flows.
  • Ensure compliance with data security standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Write well-documented, efficient code with unit tests for all data solutions.
  • Implement data engineering solutions into production systems, leading the design, development, testing, and monitoring phases.

Basic Qualifications:
✔ 6+ years of experience in software or data engineering, database management, or related field.
✔ Proficiency in Python, SQL, Java.
✔ Strong knowledge of data warehousing, dimensional modeling, and star schema design.
✔ Experience with ETL tools, cloud-based solutions, and modern lakehouse technologies (Apache Iceberg, Delta Lake, Apache Trino).
✔ Familiarity with data streaming technologies (Apache Kafka, AWS Kinesis, Apache Flink, Apache Spark).
✔ Experience with DevSecOps practices and tools (Jenkins, GitHub).
✔ Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
✔ Ability to learn quickly and adapt to new technologies in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in rail, shipping, airline, logistics, warehousing, supply chain, or high-tech industries.
  • Proficiency with cloud platforms, Jupyter, open-source tools, and geospatial data libraries.
  • Experience working in Agile environments (Scrum, Kanban, SAFe).
