We are seeking a Software Engineer to join our Verifications Decisioning team, which focuses on improving loan performance, automating decision-making, and preventing fraud using machine learning (ML) models. This team ensures applicants can access funds quickly, often within 24 hours, while extending advanced verification processes to emerging products like HELOC, Auto, and Small Dollar loans.

In this role, you will build services to integrate with new data sources, develop scalable gRPC APIs for internal consumption, and maintain high standards of data quality through robust testing frameworks. Your work will directly support improvements to ML model accuracy and extend Upstart’s innovative verification capabilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Partner with cross-functional teams to translate business goals into technical requirements
  • Design, develop, and maintain high-performance services for real-time data retrieval and decisioning
  • Optimize and refactor code to ensure scalability, efficiency, and low-latency responses
  • Maintain API infrastructure supporting multiple products and integrations
  • Ensure ML model reliability through unit and integration testing, code reviews, and monitoring production systems

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of professional software development experience building scalable web or mobile products
  • Strong coding skills in Python, Kotlin, and/or Ruby on Rails
  • Growth mindset and willingness to adopt new technologies
  • Excellent communication skills for conveying technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
  • Ownership mentality and problem-solving skills to navigate ambiguity

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to think like an owner and make impactful decisions
  • Strong written and verbal communication, adaptable to various audiences
  • Contributions to open-source projects or knowledge of modern software development best practices

Work & Travel:

  • Primarily remote, with optional collaboration from San Mateo, Columbus, or Austin offices
  • Teams meet 1–2 times per quarter for 2–4 day in-person sessions
