Our teams are mission-driven, collaborative, and deeply committed to strengthening democracy through technology.
ActBlue is currently seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join a newly formed engineering team focused on building the next generation of platform capabilities. This role offers a greenfield opportunity within a mature and trusted codebase, where you will help design and deliver flexible systems that support complex, configurable business rules and workflows. You will work closely with internal operational teams to translate real-world processes into reliable, scalable technical solutions.
As a Senior Software Engineer, you will work across the full stack using Ruby on Rails, React, TypeScript, and PostgreSQL. You will lead large initiatives from concept through delivery, balancing technical precision, usability, performance, and long-term maintainability.
Key responsibilities include:
- Delivering large-scale engineering projects over quarterly timelines with minimal supervision
- Breaking down ambiguous requirements into clear, executable technical plans
- Leading small groups of engineers on focused initiatives with defined scopes
- Collaborating with cross-functional partners including Product, Design, CX, and Legal teams
- Designing and implementing flexible data models and backend systems built for scale
- Developing intuitive internal admin tools and user-facing features
- Writing technical proposals outlining tradeoffs, risks, and solution approaches
- Improving platform performance, reliability, testing, monitoring, and documentation
- Providing mentorship through code reviews, pair programming, and technical discussions
- Proactively identifying risks, blockers, and scope changes before escalation is required
- Maintaining focus and productivity in ambiguous or evolving problem spaces
- Supporting a collaborative, inclusive, and mission-aligned engineering culture
Candidate profile:
- 3–5+ years of professional experience delivering software projects in team environments
- Strong hands-on experience with Ruby on Rails, React, TypeScript, and PostgreSQL
- Proven ability to deliver complex projects with limited guidance
- Experience leading engineers on smaller initiatives
- Strong understanding of scalability, security, and reliability best practices
- Ability to translate stakeholder needs into technical solutions
- High attention to detail, especially when accuracy and compliance are critical
- Comfortable working with distributed, remote-first teams across time zones
- Passion for software development and alignment with ActBlue’s mission

- Experience in regulated industries such as fintech, healthcare, or legal technology
- Background in building configurable systems or rules engines
- Strong data modeling skills for complex business logic
- Experience creating internal tools or administrative interfaces
- Prior collaboration with non-technical stakeholders on operational workflows
Work and benefits overview:
- Full-time, salaried, remote position within the United States
- Occasional travel required for company or departmental retreats (1–2 times per year)
- Flexible working hours within standard Monday–Friday business schedules
- Unlimited paid time off and flexible work arrangements
- Comprehensive, fully paid health, dental, and vision insurance
- Employer-sponsored retirement plan with company contributions
- Paid parental, medical, and family leave
- Home-office setup allowance and remote work support
