About the Team:
As part of the Servicing Engineering team, you will contribute to building and scaling a best-in-class loan servicing and payments platform. The team focuses on optimizing loan management, collections, and borrower payment experiences, with a strong emphasis on reliability, flexibility, and innovation in payment systems.

About the Role:
As a Senior Software Engineer focused on Payments, you will serve as a technical leader across the full stack. This role requires deep expertise in payment systems, including payment rails, ACH/NACHA standards, and transaction reliability. You will take ownership of designing and scaling payment workflows while collaborating closely with Product, Analytics, and Operations teams to deliver seamless borrower experiences.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead complex, cross-team and multi-quarter initiatives that enhance payment and loan servicing capabilities
  • Design and develop full-stack features, including payment workflows, card payment expansion, and flexible payment scheduling
  • Own and evolve payment architecture, ensuring idempotency, exactly-once processing, and scalable abstractions
  • Establish engineering best practices for observability, correctness, and operational excellence in payment systems
  • Partner with internal teams and external providers to maintain compliance with NACHA and payment network requirements
  • Mentor engineers and contribute to a culture of technical ownership, rigor, and continuous improvement
  • Support team growth through technical leadership and knowledge sharing

What We’re Looking For:

Minimum Requirements:

  • 5+ years of hands-on software development experience
  • Proven experience leading and operating distributed, microservices-based systems
  • Strong understanding of deployment pipelines, monitoring, logging, alerting, and release orchestration
  • Direct ownership of production-critical payment or financial transaction platforms

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience building and maintaining high-reliability payment or transaction processing systems
  • Knowledge of ACH, NACHA, or card payment networks and related operational workflows
  • Ability to design clean, extensible APIs that abstract complex payment logic
  • Experience with Ruby on Rails or Kotlin in a microservices environment
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to mentor and influence cross-functional teams
  • Growth mindset with a commitment to technical excellence and iterative improvement

Work Location & Flexibility:

  • Fully remote role within the United States
  • Team operates primarily across East and West Coast time zones
  • Periodic in-person team onsites held once or twice per quarter for collaboration and planning

Compensation & Benefits:
Upstart offers a competitive compensation package including base salary, performance bonuses, equity grants, and a comprehensive benefits program. Benefits include medical, dental, and vision coverage, 401(k) matching, paid time off, family and parental leave, wellness and productivity allowances, financial wellness resources, and access to Employee Resource Groups.

Upstart is an Equal Opportunity Employer and is committed to inclusive, fair, and accessible hiring practices for all candidates.
