Nextdoor connects neighbors, public agencies, and businesses in over 340,000 neighborhoods across 11 countries, fostering stronger local communities through innovative technology.
As a Senior Software Engineer, you will work closely with product managers, designers, and fellow engineers to design, develop, and maintain scalable backend systems. You will contribute across the full engineering stack and help shape product features from ideation to deployment. This role emphasizes both technical excellence and collaboration, with opportunities to mentor colleagues and influence the technical direction of the team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain backend systems using technologies including Python/Django, Kotlin/JVM, Go, SQL, GraphQL, Redis, Postgres, Kafka, and AWS
- Mentor and guide engineers while fostering a collaborative team environment
- Collaborate with product management, data science, and design teams to define and build impactful features
- Work with distributed engineering teams across Toronto, New York, San Francisco, and other locations
- Participate in company events, trainings, off-sites, volunteer activities, and team-building exercises to strengthen company culture
- Contribute to technical vision and strategy for the backend platform while ensuring reliability and scalability
Requirements:
- 6+ years of experience as a software engineer with strong backend development expertise
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent work experience
- Proven experience designing, building, and deploying scalable backend systems
- Strong coding and debugging skills across multiple systems and domains
- Leadership ability to drive technical initiatives and mentor team members
- Passion for learning new technologies and applying them to complex problems
- High initiative and ability to influence technical vision in a collaborative environment
