ActBlue, a nonprofit organization driving progressive causes and Democratic victories through innovative technology, is seeking a Senior Payments Engineer to join its Payments team. This full-time, remote role offers the chance to design and scale systems that handle significant daily transactions, including payment processing, recurring contributions, fraud prevention, and internal payment-related tools.

As a Senior Payments Engineer, you will collaborate closely with product, platform, operations, and security teams, providing technical leadership while contributing to a culture of inclusivity, mentorship, and innovation.

Key Responsibilities:

• Architect, refactor, and enhance payment systems for secure, scalable, and reliable operations across the payment lifecycle.
• Lead technical solutions, design, and execution for complex projects and initiatives.
• Recommend system-level improvements addressing security, scalability, and reliability challenges.
• Act as a consultant on payment system issues and complex transaction scenarios.
• Break down large projects into epics and prioritize technical roadmap contributions.
• Debug complex issues across the stack and design frameworks for defensive testing.
• Champion best practices, maintainable code, and clear documentation.
• Mentor and coach engineers, fostering engagement, inclusion, and professional growth.
• Support additional projects as assigned, ensuring timely delivery aligned with organizational goals.

Required Skills & Experience:

• 3–5+ years of professional experience in software engineering and team collaboration.
• Significant experience in server-side web application development, ideally Ruby on Rails.
• 3+ years working with payment systems (e.g., Stripe, PayPal, Checkout, Sift).
• Experience leading large projects with multiple engineers and complex requirements.
• Proficiency with relational databases, preferably Postgres.
• Strong understanding of performance, scalability, and security in payment processing.
• Ability to refactor legacy code and reason through complex system challenges.
• Inclusive team player with mentorship skills and collaborative mindset.
• Comfort working in distributed, remote teams across multiple U.S. time zones.
• Strong communication skills and proactive problem-solving.
