Description:
Smilow Cancer Hospital is seeking a skilled Outpatient Senior Coder to join our team remotely. This multifaceted role supports the Outpatient Coding Department by providing expertise in coding, QA review, mentoring, and A/R management. The Senior Coder collaborates with multiple departments to resolve issues, streamline workflows, and ensure timely and accurate coding. This role is ideal for someone with extensive ICD-10, CPT, and PCS coding knowledge, strong clinical understanding, and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks effectively.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage day-to-day outpatient coding activities in collaboration with leadership, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timeliness
  • Communicate and collaborate with internal and partner departments to resolve coding issues and optimize workflows
  • Perform coding for various service lines and resolve claim edits to meet billing deadlines
  • Draft compliant outpatient clinical queries
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in outpatient coding, providing guidance to staff and partner departments
  • Conduct regular QA reviews, identify coding trends, communicate findings, and implement improvements
  • Mentor and educate team members, preparing them for senior coder roles
  • Prioritize coding workload based on impact to departmental goals and provide guidance to staff
  • Provide support in the absence of the supervisor when required
  • Assist OP Vendor Relations Coordinator and provide coverage support as needed
  • Participate in career development and educational activities, sharing knowledge and best practices

Qualifications:

  • Proficient in all outpatient service lines including ancillary/radiology, ED/Observation, SDS, Oncology, infusion & injection, IR, and Cardiology
  • Prior experience with Epic and 3M systems
  • Strong understanding of coding claim edits and the revenue cycle
  • Audit educator or coding support experience preferred
  • Extensive knowledge of official coding guidelines and internal workflows
  • Advanced Excel skills for tracking, trending, and reporting, including dashboard and educational tool creation

Licensure:

  • Required coding credential from AHIMA or AAPC (COC, CIC, CCS, RHIA, RHIT, etc.)
  • Additional specialized coding certifications are helpful but not mandatory
