About the Role
We are seeking a visionary Head of Video to elevate The Athletic’s presence as a global leader in sports video across all platforms. This role will focus on league highlights, reporter video, social content, and other digital video formats. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in digital video growth strategies and will lead teams across North America and internationally to create high-quality, engaging content aligned with our editorial standards.
Key Responsibilities
• Build and launch new highlights properties and innovative video formats.
• Collaborate with the Series and Specials team leadership to align on priorities.
• Scale and manage video teams in Creative Development, including UK operations, reporter video, social video, and highlights.
• Partner with leadership to set ambitious goals and guide the team to achieve them.
• Work closely with the newsroom to create video formats and templates that highlight journalism.
• Collaborate with the commercial team to develop content that drives audience growth and revenue.
• Align with vertical leads to complement editorial strategy and expand audience reach.
• Ensure video production is supported, promoted, and monetized effectively.
• Build strong relationships across the company to foster team success.
• Organize production teams to achieve growth targets while managing budgets.
Requirements
• 10+ years of experience producing online video, including highlights and social video.
• Proven success in launching and sustaining digital video templates.
• Expert knowledge of video formats, distribution channels, and industry trends.
• Deep understanding of online video algorithms and audience growth strategies.
• Proficiency in video analytics and optimizing content for platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and social media.
• Strong knowledge of sports coverage and editorial standards.
• Experience with commercial projects and branded content.
• Excellent leadership, time management, and decision-making skills.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work remotely with occasional travel.
Compensation & Benefits
• Base salary range: $200,000 – $220,000 USD, may vary based on experience, education, and location.
