Description:
Substack is building a powerful new economic engine for culture, giving independent writers, thinkers, and creators full ownership of their work and direct relationships with their audiences. Through a subscription-based publishing platform, Substack enables financial independence and is reshaping the future of media and creative expression.

Substack is now seeking an experienced and visionary Events Lead to redefine how events support creators, culture, and community. This role will own the overall strategy, planning, and execution of Substack’s global brand events portfolio—ranging from high-profile flagship experiences to intimate creator-led gatherings—while leading and mentoring a team of talented event producers.

This is not a role focused on following an existing playbook. The Events Lead will build a scalable and impactful events engine from the ground up, creating experiences that spark conversation, strengthen communities, and showcase what is possible when creators operate independently. The role sits at the intersection of culture, technology, and media and works closely with influential voices shaping today’s digital landscape.

This position reports directly to the Head of Communications & Brand and is based in either New York or Los Angeles.

Responsibilities:

• Define and shape a comprehensive global events strategy that supports Substack’s brand vision and business objectives across markets
• Identify innovative event concepts that elevate cultural conversation, strengthen brand awareness, and attract new creators and subscribers
• Lead the full event lifecycle, from ideation and promotion through on-site execution, ensuring exceptional quality and brand alignment
• Support Partnership Leads by enabling market-specific event ideas with strategic direction and operational guidance
• Own and manage the global events budget, including goal setting, ROI measurement, and performance reporting
• Develop clear frameworks to track impact and communicate success internally
• Build, coach, and lead a high-performing team of event producers, supporting their professional growth and success
• Design scalable event formats that can expand across regions while maintaining authenticity and impact
• Collaborate closely with internal teams, external agencies, and vendors to deliver high-quality experiences while maintaining operational and financial discipline

Requirements:

• 15+ years of experience in experiential event marketing and production, including at least 5 years in a senior leadership role
• Proven track record of building and scaling global or multi-market event strategies with measurable business impact
• Strong strategic vision combined with exceptional attention to detail and executional rigor
• Excellent communication, organization, and stakeholder management skills
• Ability to build strong cross-functional relationships and inspire creative problem-solving
• Established network of top-tier agencies and vendors across creative, production, and experiential disciplines
• Demonstrated people leadership skills with a focus on team development and empowerment
• Strong cultural fluency and familiarity with the evolving media and technology landscape
• Personal connection to Substack as a creator or subscriber is highly valued
• Entrepreneurial mindset with comfort building systems and strategies from scratch in a fast-moving environment
• Willingness and flexibility to travel globally for on-site event execution when required

Substack offers a competitive total compensation package, including base salary, equity, and a comprehensive benefits program. Final compensation will be determined based on experience and expertise. Substack is proud to be an equal opportunity employer and welcomes candidates from all backgrounds who are passionate about supporting independent expression and shaping the future of media.
