Description:
Cartwheel is looking for a Controller to lead the development of a modern, scalable accounting function that supports rapid growth and multi-state expansion. Reporting to the Head of Finance, this role will build core processes from scratch, lead ERP selection and implementation, and establish a robust financial infrastructure for audits, fundraising, and operations.
Key Responsibilities:
Build and Lead the Accounting Function
- Manage month-end close, reconciliations, internal controls, and reporting
- Design scalable accounting policies and workflows
- Transition from outsourced accounting to a fully in-house function
Lead ERP Selection and Implementation
- Evaluate and select ERP systems (NetSuite, Intacct, Rillit, etc.)
- Configure ERP, design chart of accounts, implement integrations, and build processes
- Ensure financial infrastructure is audit-ready from day one
Technical Accounting and Audit Readiness
- Lead GAAP-compliant reporting and technical accounting decisions
- Prepare for external audits, including documentation and controls
- Align accounting practices with auditors and internal teams
Team Leadership
- Hire and mentor a Staff Accountant post-onboarding
- Provide guidance, clarity, and development as the team grows
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work with BizOps and Data to connect financial reporting to operational metrics (RCM, state P&L, revenue quality)
- Partner with RCM and Health Plan Ops on payer dynamics, collections, and revenue integrity
- Support leadership with budgeting, forecasting, and board reporting
Candidate Profile:
- Strong GAAP foundation and experience supporting external audits
- Hands-on experience evaluating, selecting, and implementing ERP systems
- Proven ability to build or scale accounting processes and workflows
- Skilled at linking accounting operations to business outcomes
- Excellent communication with non-finance stakeholders
- Experience hiring, managing, or mentoring accounting talent
- Comfortable working in early-stage, fast-paced, and ambiguous environments
- Passionate about improving student mental health and behavioral support
