Description:
Controller – Remote
Paragon Payroll, Inc., a rapidly growing remote-first payroll bureau and certified isolved partner, is seeking an experienced Controller to lead our financial operations. This role is central to managing client billing, tax remittances, cash flow, and vendor obligations while driving margin visibility across our business.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Management & Reporting:
· Oversee all accounting operations, including client billing, accounts receivable/payable, general ledger, tax filings, and month-end close.
· Produce accurate financial statements and internal dashboards.
· Track client profitability and identify margin leakage.
Cash Flow & Budgeting:
· Manage 13-week cash flow forecasts across operating and trust accounts.
· Optimize client fund flows, including tax payments, payroll funding, and fee collections.
· Maintain detailed visibility into burn, collections, and vendor disbursements.
Payroll Bureau Operations:
· Manage financial oversight of payroll tax collections, remittances, and liabilities.
· Ensure billing aligns with services, headcount, or pay-cycle tiers.
· Collaborate with isolved and operations teams to track revenue per client and handle exceptions.
· Coordinate payroll audits, reconciliations, and journal entries.
Systems & Automation:
· Manage financial systems including QuickBooks Online, isolved, Excel/Sheets.
· Optimize integrations to reduce manual work.
· Implement scalable processes with auditability and transparency.
Compliance & Controls:
· Ensure all payroll-related taxes are properly accounted for and reconciled.
· Work with external CPAs on filings, 280E tracking, and year-end preparation.
· Maintain and improve internal controls and documentation.
Required Qualifications:
· Strong understanding of payroll cash flow, tax fund flow, and client billing models.
· Experience with isolved or similar platforms (Paychex, Paylocity, ADP, etc.).
· Proficiency in QuickBooks Online, Excel/Google Sheets, and reporting tools.
· Comfortable working independently in a remote environment and reporting to a founder/CEO.
Key Competencies:
· Strong attention to detail in accounting and operational processes.
· Ability to build efficient processes reducing errors and manual effort.
· Able to explain financial concepts clearly and challenge inconsistencies.
· Understanding of client relationships’ impact on company financials.
Growth Path:
This is a key operational role with direct growth potential to VP of Finance or CFO as Paragon scales.
