We are looking for a dedicated Backend Engineer to join our Control Plane Team. In this role, you will contribute to both open-source client code and backend services, own feature development from ideation to deployment, and collaborate closely with product managers and UX/UI designers. This is a fully remote position, ideal for motivated individuals comfortable working asynchronously and across distributed teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, build, test, and document core software components of the Tailscale control plane
  • Develop new product features across relay infrastructure, identity integrations, and backend services
  • Maintain operational ownership of Tailscale’s running services including observability, incident response, and customer support escalations
  • Analyze and optimize system efficiency, scalability, and stability
  • Integrate a security-first mindset in both design and implementation

Qualifications:

  • Experience with distributed systems
  • Proficiency in Go programming language
  • Experience with SQL databases
  • Familiarity with networking concepts (IP addressing, routing, etc.)
  • Ability to work independently and provide constructive feedback
  • Flexibility to adapt to the fast-changing environment of a startup
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
