Description:
Harbor Health is seeking an experienced Accounting Manager to join its growing finance team as the organization continues to scale its payvider operations. This newly created role will report directly to the Controller and will play a critical role in building and strengthening scalable accounting processes across a complex multi-entity structure, including health insurance plans, medical entities, and ACO operations. This is a remote position ideal for a self-driven professional who thrives in a fast-paced startup environment and can balance strategic process development with hands-on accounting responsibilities.

Position Overview:
The Accounting Manager will be responsible for managing day-to-day accounting operations while also contributing to the development of foundational systems, controls, and processes that support long-term growth. The role requires strong technical accounting expertise, sound judgment, and the ability to work independently while collaborating closely with cross-functional teams.

Accounting Operations and Financial Close:

  • Support monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes across multiple legal entities
  • Manage general ledger activities including journal entries, reconciliations, and variance analysis
  • Assist with consolidation of financial statements across health plan, medical, and ACO entities
  • Prepare and review accounting transactions to ensure compliance with GAAP and regulatory requirements

Process Development and Internal Controls:

  • Design and implement scalable accounting policies, procedures, and workflows
  • Support the development and maintenance of internal control frameworks
  • Document standard operating procedures for accounting functions
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and strengthen financial processes

Technical Accounting and Compliance:

  • Apply technical accounting expertise to healthcare and insurance-related transactions
  • Research and resolve complex accounting issues, including new accounting standards

Team Leadership and Collaboration:

  • Supervise accounting staff and provide guidance on technical matters
  • Partner with the Controller and senior finance leadership on accounting initiatives
  • Collaborate with FP&A, operations, and clinical leadership teams
  • Support external audits and coordinate with external auditors

Systems and Reporting:

  • Utilize ERP and accounting systems to optimize accounting operations
  • Prepare financial reports and analyses for leadership and stakeholders
  • Support accounting system implementations or upgrades as needed

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge with practical application of GAAP
  • Experience with multi-entity accounting, preferably within healthcare or insurance
  • Background in building or improving accounting processes in startup or growth-stage environments
  • Experience with financial statement consolidation and account reconciliations
  • Proficiency with ERP systems and advanced Excel skills
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and thrive with minimal supervision

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in healthcare payor, provider, or payvider accounting
  • Public accounting background
  • Experience with accounting system implementations or optimizations
  • Advanced degree such as MBA or MAcc, or certifications including CPA, CMA, or CIA
